New Orleans singer-songwriter Paul Sanchez and his friend, LA-based screenwriter Colman deKay have written 40 songs based on Nine Lives. After winning a $50,000 grant from the Pepsi Foundation, and raising at least that much more, they produced this 24-song, two-disk album on which perform 109 New Orleans musicians? Who? Everybody. Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, John Boutté, Lillian Boutté, Wendell Pierce (from HBO’s Treme), Tom McDermott, Arsene DeLay, Matt Perrine, Debbie Davis, Kevin Griffin, Michelle Shocked, Harry Shearer, Shamarr Allen, The Dixie Cups... It goes on and on. .As word of the project spread, lots of the city’s musicians asked to participate. (And they all got paid.) Mayor Mitch Landrieu even sings in the finale. It’s a tremendous album. You can listen to, and buy it here, or buy it on Amazon, on iTunes, or at the Louisiana Music Factory. The idea is to generate revenue and interest with this album, so they can someday stage a Broadway play.
